The sun was high, offering a harsh light and short shadows, not my favorite, but when I saw the round bales scattered on the hillside at the Roxbury Land Trust, I drove up the bumpy road and parked. Not exactly the right moment to be testing a new tripod head, as I struggled to see my camera settings under a glaring sun. After a half hour in the dazzling heat, I headed back to my car and the water bottle I had stowed there. That’s when the tractor pulled up towing a trailer ready to carry the bales away and leave the hillside bare.
Sometimes we stop in time. Sometimes we don’t.
